What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic peptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences as a stable analogue of tuftsin — a naturally occurring immune-modulating peptide. Its sequence (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) adds a Pro-Gly-Pro "tail" that makes it far more stable than natural tuftsin, allowing it to be studied as a research compound.
In the research literature it's classified as an anxiolytic (anxiety-modulating) and nootropic (cognition-related) peptide, most often studied via the intranasal route.
How Selank Works
Selank doesn't appear to act through a single receptor. Research associates it with several overlapping mechanisms:
- GABA modulation — influences the brain's primary inhibitory system, the same pathway benzodiazepines act on, but without the sedation or dependence profile seen in that drug class in research models.
- Serotonin & monoamine balance — studied for effects on serotonin turnover in limbic brain regions.
- Enkephalin stabilisation — like its relative Semax, the Pro-Gly-Pro tail is thought to slow the breakdown of endogenous enkephalins, prolonging their activity.
- BDNF expression — animal studies report increases in Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, associated with neuroplasticity and stress resilience.
What draws research interest to Selank is the combination it's reported to show in models: anxiety-reducing activity without the sedation, cognitive dulling, or dependence associated with traditional anxiolytics.
Key Research Areas
Anxiety & Stress
Selank's most prominent research is in generalised anxiety, where Russian clinical studies reported reductions in anxiety scores — in some measures comparable to benzodiazepines, but without the sedative burden. This is the area it is most associated with in the literature.
Cognition & Memory
Animal models have investigated Selank in learning and memory paradigms, with studies measuring attention, recall and mental performance under stress. The proposed BDNF link is the mechanism most often cited here.
Mood & Neuro-immune Interaction
Because it derives from an immune-modulating peptide, Selank has also been studied for effects on the interaction between the immune system and mood — including markers such as interleukin balance in research settings.
Selank vs Semax
Selank and Semax are often discussed together — both are Russian-developed peptides with a stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro tail and an intranasal research route. The simplest distinction in the literature: Selank is studied more for anxiety and mood, while Semax is studied more for focus, drive and neuroprotection. Some research protocols investigate them together.
Research Status
It's important to be clear about where Selank stands. The published research consists primarily of studies from Russian institutions, where it has seen clinical use; independent replication in Western research is limited, and study standards vary. Selank is not an approved medicine in South Africa or most markets — it remains an investigational compound for research use only.
LA LAB Selank
LA LAB supplies Selank as a lyophilized 11 mg vial, third-party tested by Janoshik Analytical for purity and identity. View it on our Selank product page, and see our reconstitution & research guides for how it's prepared and measured.
